Robert West Speer, an Underground Railroad conductor, whose Covenanter roots were so strong that he named a son Cameron Cargill Speer.

Robert West Speer sequestered people at his farm just west of New Concord and then sent them to his nephew, James Boyd, or to Mitchell Cunningham. . . . Defying caution, Speer kept a pocket notebook in which he recorded the names of seventy-seven people he helped go north between 1842 and 1856.
