T. E. O'Leary Dies; Was Ship Master

Merchant Marine Capt. Timothy Edward O'Leary, Ret., 78, of 309 Waring Road, DeWitt, died yesterday at a local Nursing Home after a long illness.
A native of Grieg, he spent his boyhood in Lyon's Falls, Port Leyden and Boonville.
He served with the Navy in the Canal Zone during World War I. Following the war he made of career of the Merchant Marine on the Great Lakes, first with the Great Lakes Transit Co. and later spent 34 years with the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co.
Capt. O'Leary retired in 1959 having sailed as master the last 17 years of his service. In his capacity as officer of a Great Lakes vessel, Capt. O'Leary was on active duty as a temporary member of the U. S. Coast Guard Reserve during World War II. he had the rank of commander.
Capt. O'Leary was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a communicant of Holy Cross Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Dr. Harriet L. O'Leary ; a brother John L. O'Leary of Elmira; a niece, Mrs. Anthony Fiory of Summit, N. J.; two grandnieces and several cousins.
Service and burial arrangements will be announced by the Van Dusen Funeral Home, 136 W. Castle St.
