Longtime Weis checker enjoyed baking
E. Arlene Bird, 84, of 68 Wonderview Road, Catawissa, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at Columbia Montour Home Hospice at Maria Hall in Danville.
She was born Aug. 25, 1926, in Danville, the daughter of the late Harry and Getha Keiser Newbury.
She graduated from Danville High School. Arlene was employed for many years as a checker at Weis Market in Danville. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Mayberry Township, Danville, where she served in Ladies Aide, Christie Circle and Bible School. Arlene was a 4-H Leader. Other memberships included Roaring Creek Valley Grange and Christian Women's Club. She took great joy in cooking and especially enjoyed baking apple dumplings, raisin-filled cookies and making applesauce. Arlene enjoyed needlepoint and also enjoyed doing puzzles, including Find-A-Word. Arlene's greatest enjoyment was spending time with her family.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, David E. Bird, whom she married March 19, 1949. Also surviving are four sons: David L. Bird and his wife, Norma, of Catawissa; Rodney Bird and his wife, Cindy of Catawissa; Dale Bird and his wife, Sue, of Shamokin; and Jan Bird and his wife, Kathy, of Sunbury; and one daughter, Karen Shultz, and her husband, Marlin, of Danville. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Brian and his wife, Kellie; Bradley; Melissa and her husband, Justin; Matthew; Christopher; Jamie; Jennifer and her husband, Gordon; Ryan; and Tanya; and seven great-grandchildren: Jason, Brittany, Trenton, Madison, Darren, Alyssa and Megan. She is survived by one brother, Robert Newbury, of Northumberland; two sisters: Jean Woodruff and her husband, Harold, of Numidia; and Doris Snyder and her husband, Robert, of Bloomsburg. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive her.
She was preceded in death by one grandson, Andrew Bird; one brother, Allen Newbury; and one sister, Dorothy Keefer.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services to be held Saturday, July 2, 2011, at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, 29 High Road, (Mayberry Township), Danville, with the Rev. John Brock officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will provide flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to either St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund or Columbia-Montour Home Hospice, 410 Glenn Ave., Suite 200, Bloomsburg, PA 17815.
