Lydia Bellows was the youngest of eight children born to Ithamar and Dorcas Bellows. Born 14 May 1771 in Groton, New London, CT, Lydia was a schoolmate of Stephen Brewster who was a grandson of Capt. Oliver and Alethia Allyn Spicer. Stephen lived with his grandparents because his mother had died when he was only 9 years old. On 1 May 1796 in Groton, New London, Ct. Lydia Bellows was married to Stephen Brewster by Justice of the Peace Amos Geer.
