The Lead Daily Call newspaper of March 9, 1929 reported: "Aate Ahonen, 56, a resident of Lead since 1902, died at the family home at 309 Park avenue this morning at 3:30 o'clock after an illness which has kept him confined for a lengthy period. Mr. Ahonen was born on September 1, 1873 in Kuopio, Finland, where he spent his young manhood. He came to this country in 1900 and went to Calumet, Mich., where he remained for two years. In 1902 he came to the Black Hills, arriving in Lead on July 26, 1902, and began work in the employ of the Homestake Mining Company, continuing in this capacity until his last illness. In 1903 he was married to Miss Anna Turovaara, of Lead, and to this union were born three children, Henry of Lead, Mrs. A. Kivela of Winona, Mich., and another child who died at birth. Mrs. Ahonen passed away in 1910. Mr. Ahonen married again in 1913, his bride being Miss Hanna Hirstia, of Lead, who survives him. The illness from which Mr. Ahonen suffered so long before his death was tuberculosis of the hip. It caused his retirement in October 1927...Besides the immediate family, two brothers in Finland also survive the deceased..."
The Lead Daily Call of March 11, 1929 noted that funeral services were from the Finnish Lutheran Church on Mill Street in Lead; "The services tomorrow afternoon will be conducted in both Finnish and English."
