Amanda Bell Courson Downs is the mother of Nettie Lee Courson. Amanda, the daughter of William Bell, married an unknown Courson. Ida Bell, Amanda's younger sister, married Jesse Melville Downs. Ida died 15 Dec 1904. Jesse M. Downs then married the sister, Amanda Bell Courson before 1910.
Amanda's first husband was Robert E. Lee Courson. He died of yellow fever in Santiago, Cuba on Sept. 19, 1898 during the Spanish American War.
In the 1910 census five of Amanda's children fathered by Courson were enumerated. Nettie Courson is shown as a step daughter of Jesse M. Downs.
