The Fenton community mourns the death of a long time resident, August Bierstedt, 81, who passed away Jan. 15 at the Holy Family hospital at Estherville. Mr. Bierstedt was a member of St. John's Lutheran church in Fenton for nearly 50 years.
August John Bierstedt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Christian Bierstedt was born at Clayton Center, Clayton county, Iowa, March 3, 1871.
He came with his parents in a covered wagon to Burt, Iowa. Here he received his elementary training. Mr. Bierstedt was confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran church at Lotts Creek, March 29, 1885 by the Rev. C. F. W. Maahs.
The family later moved to the Fairville community.
On June 26, 1896, Mr. Bierstedt was united in holy wedlock to Miss Lizzie Betche at Fairville. To this union was born eight sons and three daughters; Clara, Herman, Ferdinand, Henry, Clarence, Emil, Alvin, Luellna, Esther and Gustav.
In 1904 Mr. Bierstedt became a voting member of St. John's Lutheran church in Fenton. He served the congregation as treasurer for four terms, trustee three terms and was a member of the church building committee in 1913.
Mr. Bierstedt was a regular attendant at church and communion until 1947 when a leg amputation, confined him to a wheel chair.
On Thursday afternoon, Jan. 15 he was taken to the Holy Family hospital at Estherville.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a sister, Emily; two brothers, Charles and Henry; three sons, Herman and Henry in infancy and Alvin in 1934.
He leaves his sorrowing widow and his children, Clara, Mrs. Ferdinand Mueller Sr. Ferdinand, Clarence and Emil all of Fenton; Luellna, Mrs. Alfred Bell of Whittemore end Esther and Gustav at home.
His brothers are Herman and Fred of Whittemore and a sister, Mrs. Martha Mueller of Fenton.
Funeral services were held Tuesday January 20, 1:30 at the home and 2:00 o'clock in St. John's Lutheran church with Rev. W. H. Friedrich officiating. Burial was in St. Luke's cemetery.
Pallbearers were nephews, Art Mueller, Roy Mueller, Theodore Bierstedt, Walter Bierstedt, Wilfred Bierstedt and Alfred Bierstedt.
