Son of James Richard and Anne Meriwether Watson,closely related to the Clark,Meriwether and Lewis families of Albermarle County,and nephew of Judge Egbert R.Watson,of Charlottesville.
He graduated at the University of Virginia and studied medicine at the Medical College of Virginia,graduated in 1855.Dr.Watson was appointed surgeon to the Virginia Penitentiary by Governor Fitzhugh Lee,and held the position twelve years.
In 1889 he accepted the position as Richmond examiner of the Metropolitan Insurance Company,of New York,and served for twenty years.
In 1860 he was appointed assistant surgeon in the Confederate Army and served throughout the four years.
In 1859 he married Miss Virginia F.Butler,daughter of William F.Butler of Richmond.
