Funeral services for Dr Walter W. Arzberger, 97, of 1120 Jones St, a veterinarian in the Watertown area for over 70 years, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St Paul's Episcopal Church with the Rev Fred Himmerich officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Dr Arzberger was born 17 February 1888 in Helenville, son of Carl and Sarah Arzberger. On 21 August 1916 he married the former Doris Schulze at St Paul's Episcopal church in Watertown. She preceded him in death 11 September 1979.
Dr Arzberger had been the oldest practicing veterinarian in the Unites States until his retirement last year. He practiced veterinary medicine in the local area for over 70 years and for 35 years was the only veterinary in Watertown. His special interest was in treating horses.
He was a graduate of the University of Chicago Medical School in 1910, serving as valedictorian. He was captain of the 105th Cavalry for 20 years, providing veterinary services for the troop's horses. He was a frequent contributor to the American Veterinary Medical Journal and had been working on his
autobiography since his retirement.
Dr Arzberger was a member of Lincoln Lodge No. 20, Knights of Pythias, American Veterinary Medical Association, 105th Cavalry and former member of the Watertown Police and Fire Commission.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Maas of Watertown, one son John of Oconomowoc, four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one brother Fredrick and one sister, Jessie Goddard, both of Oconomowoc.
