Born to Olive Blanche and Frank Norman Tillotson in Sacramento, CA, Clare was raised as a gold miner's daughter, living at Lower Glen Mine, near French Meadows. One of four daughters living at the mine, Clare attended Foresthill Elementary School and Placer High in Auburn, CA. Married to Fritz Holsclaw in 1941, Clare and Fritz had three children, Mavis, Gary, and Kenny. Pioneers and entrepreneurs, she and Fritz built a flight strip (Cedar Springs Flight Strip) in the mountains above Foresthill with cabins and a campground. From the Flight Strip, they moved to Loomis and entered the chicken business. Later they changed course and established LaClare Apartments on the Loomis property. Divorced in 1984, Clare continued adding to her rental properties and built a successful business.
Clare was predeceased by her beloved sons, Kenny (age 5) and Gary (age 19 - Vietnam War); her sisters Dolly Schluckebier, Edna Marshall, and Anna Edwards.
She is survived by her daughter Mavis Strebler; grandson Jimmy Strebler, wife Tessa, great grandson Logan Strebler; grandson John Strebler, wife Laura, great grandsons Zachary and Nathan Strebler; grandson Rob Strebler; and two sisters, Emma Mae Grant and Frances Rechenmacher.
Clare will be remembered by her loved ones and dear friends for her indomitable spirit, vivaciousness, work ethic, faith, persistence, generosity, and her love of song and verse.
Services celebrating her life will be held January 4, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at the 1st Baptist Church, 3300 Taylor Road, Loomis, CA.
