He was born on May 3, 1922 in Springfield, the son of Eugene and Mary L. Hartmann Bietsch.
A resident of Springfield for all his life, Eugene graduated from Cathedral Boys High School in 1941.
He served as a corporal in the United States Army during WWII in the South Pacific for three years and received many distinguished medals including two bronze service stars for Luzon and North Solomons Campaigns.
He was a charter member of Christ the King Church where he ushered for many years.
During his high school years, Eugene worked for Metzger's drug store.
He retired from Fiat Allis in 1981 after 40 years and built seven homes during his lifetime. He was most proud of his lawn.
He married Doris J. Rebok on December 8, 1945 and she survives.
Also surviving are three daughters Kiara "Barbara" Christa of Redmond, WA, Mary (Bruce) Centko of Auburn, IL and Nancy (Philip) Stone of Springfield; two sons David (Marie) Bietsch of Georgetown, TX and Richard Bietsch of Springfield; five grandchildren Renee Wall, Brandy Wheeler, Jason Bietsch, David Dilley and Jacob Bietsch; nine great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law Iris Bietsch of Auburn and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Harry Bietsch.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m., Thursday, June 30, 2011 at Staab Funeral Home with a prayer service at 5:00 p.m.
Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 1, 2011 at Christ the King Church with Msgr. David Lantz officiating.
Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Care of Illinois.
