She took her nurses training at the veterans hospital in Denver, Colorado and was working as a nurse at Queens Hospital in Hawaii during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. She enlisted in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and served in England, France, Germany, Belgium, and Scotland.
She married Manley D. Kemper at Oregon City, Oregon on December 21, 1946 and the couple made their home in Roseburg, Oregon until retiring to Coos Bay 12 years ago.
Velda enjoyed fishing, gardening, sewing, and working crossword puzzles.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years: Manley Kemper of Coos Bay; daughters: Carol Ann Worral of North Bend and Judith Susan Spitzer of Acton, CA; sons: Larry Dean Kemper of Medford, OR and William "Bill" Clyde Kemper of Twain Harte, CA; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
