Moses was a direct descendant of Gov. William Bradford of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
Moses was a cousin of Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams through his great great grandmother Edith Adams, 2nd cousin to the Elder John Adams.
The Barton's were several families of numerous physicians from Dutchess and earlier Westchester Counties, NY.
Moses' uncles were Bradford (farmer) of Cobleskill, Schoharie Co, NY, Dr. Lewis and William of Little Meadows, Susquehanna Co, PA.
Moses' father moved his family to Owego, NY before 1820
Moses' grandmother, Abigail Bradford, died in 1815 at the home of her son Lewis in Little Meadows.
Moses married Amy Allen (of the same Allen family group as the Rev War hero, Ethan Allen) from Binghamton, New York between 1838 and 1841.
Family started a farm in Warren Twp, Bradford Co, Pennsylvania, just 3 miles west of Little Meadows and 10 miles southeast of Owego.
1850 Census lists Moses (37 yo), Amy (43 yo), Mary (8 yo), Maria (6 yo), Polly (3 yo), Sally Allen (17 yo, Amy's relation), and Henry Bulless (16 yo). Parents born in NY and all others born in PA.
Family moved to Elgin, Wabasha Co, Minnesota in Fall 1857
1860 Census (21 Jun 1860) lists Moses B. Barton (45 yo, NY), Amy (40 yo, NY), Maria (18 yo, NY), Polly (15 yo, NY), Tiny (4 yo, NY), and Andrew Crawford (18 yo, NY). Of course, the NY birthplaces for the children are incorrect and the ages are rough estimates. Andrew and Maria were not married until November. A neighbor must have provided the information.
Family moved to Winona, Winona Co, Minnesota in 1868
1870 Census for the 3rd Ward of Winona City on 20 Jul 1870 lists Moses (57 yo, NY), Amy (64 yo, NY), and Lestina (13 yo, NY, attending school).
Family moved to Benton Twp north of Anita, Cass Co, Iowa in 1872
Their home was in the Cass Co. stomping grounds of the Crooked Creek Cowboys, aka Troublesome Creek Banditti. While they terrorized the natives, everyone kept at least a shot gun by the door.
1880 Census is missing the Benton Twp information.
Moses death record notes he had neuralgia of the pleura for 5 years and an inflamation for 2 years.
Moses is buried in the Highland Cemetary near Anita, Cass, Iowa, with wife and youngest daughter Letitia, whom he called Tiny when she was young and Tina in later years. Moses and Tina's graves are marked while Amy's grave is unmarked.
