Joseph was active in the militia and was elected captain by 1808. One of his responsibilities was to court martial members who failed to report on muster days. For example, twice he held court in the Practical Farmer Inn and among others fined several members of the Grubb clan one dollar, which must have made him very popular in the family. Joseph continued his militia duties and was a Major during the War of 1812.
