Charlie was born and raised in Cobb County, Georgia where he and his future wife Lou Floyd attended the Mableton School. Charlie was the second of five children of William and Harriet Moss Thomas, but he was orphaned at age 7. (His 26 year old father William was killed in a cotton gin accident in Cobb County, Georgia) Charlie was the brother of Clifton Rupert Thomas, Lucy Tucker, and Willie Thomas Chupp. He was named for his mother's uncle, Mansfield Jackson Brooks. Charlie was raised by his maternal grandparents, Alfred Young Moss and Sarah Brooks Moss, who owned a general store at 929 Front Street, Mableton, Georgia.Charlie's middle daughter Gladys was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee so he may have lived there for a while. The oldest daughter Carmen's birthplace is not known.Charlie moved to Atlanta and lived at 9 Prospect Place NE in the Old Fourth Ward (1920 Federal Census, houses were renumbered in Atlanta in 1926). He lived at 691 Grady Place SW in West End during the 1930 Census, and finally 648 Peeples Street SW in the 1940's.Charlie owned a grocery store at 248 Highland Ave, Atlanta, Ga. (documented on WWI draft registration) and later owned the Trinity Avenue parking lot used by state employees in downtown Atlanta. Charlie and Lou had three children: Carmen, Gladys, and Charles Jr.
