Gus immigrated to America in 1881, along with his parents and sister. They moved to Iowa where he and his father worked in a coal mine.
Gus married Hildur Theresa Sundstrom on November 28, 1891.
In about 1896, Gus and Hildur moved to Aldine, Texas. There they raised 10 children and did well for themselves.
Gus donated a portion of his land to Aldine ISD to build a school that was named for him, Gus A. Oleson Elementary.
