Helen Lucille Wolfe McHenry was born in Houston on 20 July 1921. She was one of the first graduates of the Kinkaid School and received her Bachelor of Art Degree in Music Education from Southern Methodist University. She was a classically trained vocalist specializing in opera, singing at many events in the mid-Forties. She taught music in Houston during the final years of World War II and in 1945, married Army Air Corps Captain Thomas R. McHenry Jr., who later founded McHenry Construction Company. She served as Vice President of Refugio Oil Company, founded by her father, Reese Allen Wolfe.

Active in political campaigns in the 60's and 70's, she also held positions in civic and garden clubs. She was a formidable bridge player, excellent and innovative chef and traveled extensively in her lifetime, savoring new horizons and exotic locales. She believed that every one and every place had a unique story to tell.

She and her husband, Tom, raised three children, Helen Cordes of Sugar Land, Thomas McHenry of Houston, and Reese McHenry of College Station. Grandchildren, Katherine Ottmers, Allison Copeland, Lauren McHenry, and Colin McHenry survive her.

The family extends a heart-felt thank you to the staff of Sugar Land Oaks Assisted Living Facility and the hospice staff of VistaCare Foundation.

Services will be held on Tuesday, 11 February 2003, at Forest Park West Mausoleum Chapel, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates that remembrances be directed to Sugar Land Oaks, 151 Commerce Green Blvd., Sugar Land, TX 77478 and VistaCare Foundation, 701 North Post Oak, Suite 450, Houston, TX 77024.
