JOAN CARLSON BRINGARDNER

Joan Carlson Bringardner, age 88, died Tuesday night at her home in New Smyrna Beach with her children at her side after a hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer. Her life-long devotion to her husband and family and her unconditional love, kindness, adventurousness, and positive attitude were a source of strength and inspiration to those who knew her well.

Joan was born on December 8, 1922, in Sioux City, Iowa, the oldest of four children of John and Marie Jeannette Carlson. When the depression hit, her father worked wherever he could, and she found herself living in railroad towns across the country, an experience she came to enjoy. Her family finally settled in Palestine Texas, and she lived there throughout her school years. School for her was the door to discovering the world; she loved to learn and believed in the importance of education for both men and women. She studied math, statistics, and accounting at the University of Texas while working part-time jobs. Making a contribution was important to her, and she wasn't afraid to take risks. Stirred by love of country, she accepted an offer to study engineering in Iowa and work in the aircraft industry (Curtiss-Wright) in St. Louis and Buffalo, which she did until World War II ended. After that she took a job as a "computer" at Cornell Aeronautical Lab Buffalo analyzing wind tunnel data, missile trajectories, and rocket design and worked next door to the ENIAC, the first general-purpose electronic computer. Her experiences at this time followed those of the pioneering World War II women depicted in the recent documentary video titled Top Secret Rosies.

Joan met her husband, Don Bringardner, in Buffalo at the end of World War II and they married after a 9-month courtship. They have six children and five grandchildren. She was a stay-at-home mother until her youngest child reached high school. The arts were her passion as a child and as an adult, especially piano but also painting and poetry. She studied piano for six years, could play by ear, and performed as an accompanist often for her children as they danced or performed on cello, violin, trumpet, or clarinet. Her children grew up surrounded by her artwork and she encouraged them to pursue drawing and painting themselves. For decades, golf was a social past time and she enjoyed participating in local tournaments.

Her other interests included sewing, travel, cooking and eating good food, gardening, birds, swimming, and playing bridge. She made almost all her children's clothes and organized family vacations every summer including one involving all eight family members in a station wagon for 6 weeks traveling to both coasts and Mexico. Once retired, she enjoyed international travel. Returning to college full time, she got a degree in math education in 1970 at the University of Delaware and taught high school math in both Delaware and in Florida for over a decade followed by a few years as a bookkeeper then retirement. She was one of the first senior citizens in her community to buy a computer (1983 – before her adult children). Volunteer work as a bookkeeper, newsletter writer, AARP tax consultant for elderly, and computer tutor made use of the computer. She enjoyed programming in Basic for fun and even developed a computer program with calculations to generate colorful fractal graphics. Over the last couple of decades she has been active in AAUW and the Coronado Garden Club, holding leadership positions in both.

Her husband Don died in 1976. She was also preceded in death by her brother Jack, her parents, grandchild James, and sister Mary.

She is survived by her brother Bob of New Port Richey FL; son Art of New Smyrna Beach FL; daughter Barbara and son-in-law Richard Geller of New York City; daughter Jean and son-in-law David Whitcomb of Madison WI; daughter Donna of Madison WI; daughter Sue and son-in-law Jim Kennedy of Wilmington DE; and son Rob and daughter-in-law Tricia of Snoqualmie WA. She leaves behind five grandchildren; Katie, Dan, and Alex Kennedy and Sarah and Emma Whitcomb; step-grandchildren Lisa, Jason and his wife Mikiko; and many nieces and nephews. She loved Don's family as her own and maintained close relationships until she died. Her family wishes to thank Apex Home Health Care and Dr. Yee of Volusia Medical for their months of supportive and compassionate care and University of Florida Proton Therapy for giving her the chance to participate in research while fighting cancer. Services are planned for 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 29, at Sacred Heart Church in New Smyrna Beach. Friends and family may call before the service from 9:00-10:00 AM at Settle-Wilder Funeral Home in New Smyrna Beach. Burial will be at Edgewater-New Smyrna Cemetery after the services. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to AAUW Scholarship Fund c/o Lois Neufeld, 4208 Gull Cove, New Smyrna Beach, FL 32169.
