Carol A. Buckles, 91, of Albion, NE, passed away Sunday, February 4, 2024 at the Good Samaritan Center in Albion, NE.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 10, 2024, at Levander Funeral Home, 1555 S. 6th Street, Albion, NE, with Pastor Mark McClintick officiating. Interment will follow at Dublin Cemetery, Primrose, NE. Visitation will be 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday at Levander Funeral Home, 1555 S. 6th Street, in Albion, NE.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Saving Grace Bible Church, Boone County Health Center Foundation, or the Good Samaritan Society in Albion, NE.

Carol Ann Buckles, daughter of Harold and Vera (Fenton) Babcock was born on September 21, 1932, on a farm three miles northwest of Primrose, NE. She began first grade at Dublin School District 22 in September of 1937. Her parents moved in March of 1938 to a farm in Greeley County, NE. There, she attended School District 63/87 through 8th grade, then attended Spalding High School until March of 1946 when her parents moved to a farm two miles east of Albion, NE. She attended Albion High School and graduated in 1949 at the age of 16. Carol attended the University of Nebraska for two years and then two years at Nebraska Wesleyan University where she majored in Education.

On August 16, 1953, Carol married Kenneth L. Buckles of Ericson, NE. Upon Ken's graduation from UNL (and ROTC), Carol and Ken lived in Maryland, then France where Ken fulfilled his U.S. Army commitment. Their first daughter, Cheryl Ann was born in Albion, and three months later Carol and Cheryl joined Ken in France. Upon returning to the U.S., they lived in Ft. Wayne, IN where their next two daughters were born: Lauri Sue and Diana Louise.

Carol was a stay-at-home mom until 1967, when she became a para-professional at Littlejohn Elementary School in Dekalb, IL, responsible for the Reading Resource Center. In 1969, she became the secretary for the Dean of the College of Business, Northern Illinois University (Dekalb, IL). In 1973, Ken accepted a position with General Electric which moved them to Tell City, IN. There, Carol became a G3 Specialist at the Research, Conservation & Development Council in a nearby town. In 1976, she began work at the Tell City Vitamin Village Health Food Store later becoming the manager. In 1979, Ken suffered a debilitating stroke necessitating early retirement and Carol left the workforce to care for him. In 1987, Carol and Ken moved back to Albion, NE, where Ken later passed away in March of 1991. Carol continued to live in Albion until her death.

Carol belonged to the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Saving Grace Bible Church, Boone/Nance County Genealogy Society, and the Kitchen Klatter Club. She served as President of the Dublin Cemetery Association for 16 years. She sang in various church choirs for over 50 years. She assisted her sister-in-law, Shirley Babcock, in establishing the Visually Impaired Peer Support (VIPS) Group in 1993 and was active in it for over 20 years. She helped establish the Albion Mission Possible store, where she was Chairman of the Board for many years. She also called Bingo at the Good Samaritan Society in Albion for 16 years.

In 1999 she received the Ministry of the Laity Award from the Nebraska Conference of the United Methodist Church. In 2010, she received the Valiant Woman award from Albion Church Women United. Carol enjoyed spending time with her family, leading and attending bible studies, singing and genealogy.

She leaves to mourn, her daughters: Cheryl Buckles of Dallas, TX; Diana Buckles of Houston, TX; son-in-law: Tim (Ellen) Schultz of Houston, TX; grandchildren: Kelly (Nick) Herndon; Benjamin Papermaster; Brett (Sheila) Schultz; Ariel Papermaster; Zachary Papermaster; great-grandchildren: Luke and Lauri Kate Herndon; Kellan, Keagan, Quinn and Rhett Schultz; sister-in-law: Kay Buckles; as well as nieces, nephews, and many friends.

She was preceded in death by husband Kenneth; her parents; daughter: Lauri Schultz; brother and sister-in-law: Harold Jr. and Shirley (Crews) Babcock; son-in-law: Barry Papermaster; brother-in-law: LaVerne Buckles; sister-in-law: Betty (Buckles) Deitloff and Delayne "Dee" Deitloff.
