The spelling of Burt's first name was DELONA on his death certificate, but his WWI and WWII Draft Registration Cards spelled it as DELONIA. Also, his WWI draft card listed his middle name first, and he signed it as B. D. Walters, but that's the only instance I've found where he switched his given and middle names.

Burt was the son of Elbert Fletcher Walters and Martha Elizabeth Walters. His mother may have died when he was young because his father remarried in 1898.

His paternal grandparents were Harmon Walters and Nancy P. Ford, his maternal grandparents were Joseph M. Walters and Martha Jane Ford (Nancy and Martha were sisters), he was the great-grandson of William Ford and Nancy Lively, and the great-great grandson of Joseph Lively Sr. and Frances Maddy.

Burt married Virginia Wilda "Jennie" Hoback in Summers County, WV on 14 Nov 1906, and was retired from the C & O Railroad when he died at the age of 75 (his wife predeceased him).
