John Sherman Dies Thursday
John H. Sherman, 76, sheriff of Dickinson county for two terms beginning in 1917, died about 5 a.m., Thursday, at his home in Lansing following an illness which dated back to Christmas Day, 1945. Sherman, and a son, Guy, shared the office of sheriff from 1917 to 1925, while in office they made many friends and were principals in some of the county's outstanding cases.Guy is present utilities commissioner at Coffeyville and has been acting mayor since several months illness of Mayor J. D. Byers.
After his tenure in the sheriff's office, Sherman went to the state prison at Lansing as a guard. He served there for 22 years, resigning about three years ago.
He suffered a stroke on Christmas Day, 1945, and had a second attack in April. Since then he has been confined to his bed.The body will be brought to Abilene Friday. Funeral and burial arrangements have not been completed but will be announced later from the Eicholtz funeral home.
Sherman is survived by his widow, four sons, Guy of Coffeyville, Ralph and Carl of Los Angeles and Paul of Chicago; one brother, T. W. Sherman of Abilene; six sisters, Mrs. Florence Torres of Wichita, Mrs. Mabel Reed of Manchester, Mrs. Ella Sprouse of Chicago, Mrs. Myrtle Mosier of Los Angelse and Mrs. Carrie Jones and Mrs. Bertha Hershaw of Douglas, Michigan and other relatives.
