Sarah was the daughter of Thomas Bain Potter and Rachel Caroline Allen.

From "History of Gentry & Worth Counties, 1882", page 447-448:

"Thomas B. Potter, farmer, section 25, is the son of John and Clarissa (Beatty) Potter, both of whom were natives of Tennessee. He was born in Gentry County, Missouri, July 17, 1848 , and was reared on a farm, his education being received in the common schools of this county. He has a
landed estate of 143 acres, all of which is under fence, with a good orchard, and he keeps a good grade of native stock. Mr. Potter was married in Gentry County, February 12, 1871, to Rachel C. Allen. The result of this union is six children, five of whom are living: Clarissa, James W., Nora L., Sarah E. and Laura J. Potter. Mrs. Potter was born in Warren County, Iowa, May 18, 1853. She is the daughter of William Allen, a native of Kentucky, and Sarah (Johnson) Allen, of Daviess County, Missouri. Mrs. P. is a member in good standing of the Christian Church."

Sarah married Schuyler Grant Cox on January 5, 1896. They had 8 children.
