In 1860 census Mahala was listed as being able to read and write. Mahala continued as head of household after Ira died in 1865, while they continued to live in TN and their move to Randolph Co. AR abt 1879. After Permelia married, about 1886, Mahala lived with her until Permelia died in 1902. She then lived with Robert for a short time, then lived with Jack until her death in 1907. She was a tall woman who wore a bonnet most of the time. In her later years, she was hard of hearing, could not read or write, was backward and would not go places very often. (This info was told by Mahala to Ida and Jack Sparks and subsequently told to Ivan Sparks Cook, who in turn gave this info to Carl and Joyce Sparks.)
Carl and Joyce Sparks made cement markers for a number of our Sparks ancestors who didn't have stones. This is one of them.
