DROWNED IN THE PAWNEE
Harry Maphis, seventeen years old, was drowned last evening about 8 o'clock just below the Reed bridge across the Pawnee west of town. A party of men dragged the creek in the vicinity until after one o'clock last night in the effort to find the body. Early this morning the search was begun again and about 8 o'clock Walter Smith Jr. found the body in the shallower water near the shore, a short distance below where he had gone down.
Harry Maphis, in company with a number of harvesters who are working for H. H. Reed west of town, went swimming just below the cement bridge. He could not swim, but had been floating for a few feet downstream and catching on one of the pilings of the old bridge. The last time he tried it he missed the piling and the swift current carried him out into the deep water. His companions saw him go down and attempted a rescue, but they say he never came up the second time.
The drowned boy was an orphan. He was the grandson of Isaac Boley, formerly of Larned, and a nephew of Mrs. Wm. Mullins of this city. He had been working at the Reed dairy for the past few months.
