Helen was born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin where her father worked as a Jewel Tea Salesman. They later moved to Fargo and then Casselton where she attended grade school. Her father rather a cafe and gas station until moving to a farm near Leonard, ND. Helen attended school in Leonard and met Perry Kistler whom she married in Moorhead on September 1, 1945.
