John A. Logan Triplett was born on November 27, 1883 near Grantsburg, Johnson County, Illinois to John Marcus and Mary Elizabeth Triplett. He was named after famous Illinois politician and Civil War general John A. Logan. (On his daughter Sylvia's birth certificate, Logan listed his birthplace as "Pope Co Ill." However, his WWII draft registration card has Grantsburg, Illinois as his birthplace. Grantsburg is in Johnson Country, adjacent to Pope County.)

In 1920 Logan was working for Swinehart Tire & Rubber Co. in Akron, Ohio. He and wife Meda and, presumably, infant daughter Sylvia lived at 850 Carlysle Street in Akron.

He married Meda McClanahan in Alexander County, Illinois on July 18, 1918.

At some point Logan relocated with his family and other extended family members to Newport, Minnesota. He became a railroad man and operated the swing bridge over the Mississippi River at Newport.

During a two-week period in early 1922, Logan's wife Meda and infant daughter Mary Elizabeth died in Minnesota.

After the 1938 marriage of his daughter Sylvia to Marlin Hydal, they all moved to Petersburg, Michigan where Logan lived until his death in 1972.

Logan died in an Ohio nursing home. His earthly remains were transported by air and then hearse to Newport Cemetery, Newport, Minn., where he was interred next to his wife Meda and infant daughter Mary Elizabeth. His daughter Sylvia, son-in-law Marlin O. Hydal, and grandson Gaylord Oren Hydal were in attendance, along with other Triplett and Hydal family members. Sylvia read a tribute to Logan (with Gaylord's help) at the graveside service.

Note: Although his marker has his birth year as 1884, he was born November 27, 1883, five month's after his father John Marcus Triplett died.

Logan's grave marker erroneously lists his birth year as 1884, as does the Social Security Death Index.

(Logan was most likely born at home on a farm. Birth certificates were uncommon in rural areas in those days. Birth dates and years were often arrived at by family reckoning or taken from the U.S. Census for Social Security purposes.)

December 15, 2014: The accompanying 1900 U.S. Census image dated June 11, 1900 contains proof, given by Logan's mother to the enumerator, that Logan was born "Nov 1883" and was age "16" on the day of the census. Extract of census data below. Gaylord O. Hydal (Logan's grandson.)
