Mr. John F. Cross died suddenly last Thursday, Oct. 8 at 5:30 p.m. at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jake Counts, in South Whitney

His death came as a shock to the entire community as he had apparently been in his usual state of health.

Mr. Cross, or as he was more familiarly called "Uncle John" was a native of Mississippi. He was born in Newton county, Mississippi, May 20, 1856. He lived there until 1869 when he moved to Texas with his parents, locating at Hamilton Springs, later moving to Fort Graham.

On Sept. 10, 1876, he was married to Mattie J. Lard and to this union there were born eight children, all of whom survive. He moved the family to Whitney in August 1903, where he lived until his death.

Mr. Cross made a profession of faith in Christ in his early manhood days and united with the Ft. Graham church. Truly, yet quietly, he lived a useful Christian life. He was a friend to both young and old and the love and sympathy of his friends was beautifully manifested in their kind ministrations to the bereaved family in his sudden passing away.

The large gathering, together with the beautiful floral offering, showed the esteem with which he was held in his home community.

The funeral services were conducted Friday, Oct. 9, 1936, at 4 p.m. by Rev. O. N. Baucom of Denton, assisted by Rev. M. F. Allen, pastor of the Whitney Presbyterian church, and Rev. F. E. Weller, pastor of the Missionary Baptist church, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jake Counts, with whom he had lived since 1923. His remains were laid to rest beneath a blanket of flowers in the Fort Graham cemetery, beside his wife who departed this life April 8, 1918. Claude Scruggs was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

He leaves to mourn his departure three boys and five girls. W. W. Cross, Mrs. J. G. Marsh, Mrs. B. Boiles, I. D. Cross, Mrs. Jake Counts, Mrs. C. R. Dunn, all of Whitney; Mrs. R. A. Aldrich, Dallas, Texas; J. O. Cross, Mineola, Texas; one brother, W. S. Cross, Lubbock; one sister, Mrs. Mollie Frazier, Whitney, besides a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren and a host of friends.
