"My Dear Mother,

I feel sad and gloomy tonight. After a struggle unparalleled in the history of the world, after the shedding of so much blood, we can see no prospect of peace. The soil of Virginia has been baptized in blood, and almost every foot of ground from the Potomac to the Chickahominy is sacred, rendered so by deeds of heroism of Virginians and the sons of her sister states".
