Consider drowned in the Deerfield River with his long-time good friend Increase Briggs; they were two of five people, the others being Mr's Field, Foster, and Moore, who were trying out a small skiff that Mr Field of Conway had built in hopes it would improve the crossing of the river from Conway to Shelburne where Mr Field's Clothier Works was located. The group struck a rock resulting in being stuck in the river; as they rocked the boat to try to become free, the boat took on water and when they began to move even more water came on board; Increase could not swim and the account of his drowning indicates he began to struggle and pull down Mr. Field; his friend Consider who had safely swam to shore jumped back into the water to help; Mr. Field was freed from Increase's grip but Increase and Consider perished. Their bodies were recovered within an hour of the incident.
A booklet was printed that describes the events of the drowning and the sermon which was presented at their funeral:
