FODERBERG
Leon D. Foderberg, son of George E. and Bertha K. Foderberg, was born in Holstein, Iowa, on Feb. 21, 1917, and passed away on July 13, 1993, at his home in West Des Moines, at the age of 76 years.
Leon was a 1st Lt. in the U.S. Army and was awarded the Purple Heart during his tour of duty in World War II. Following his discharge he was a resident of Chariton from 1945 to 1960.
After a 37 year career working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service, he worked for seven years with the Iowa Soil Conservation Department. He was an active member and past president of the Soil Conservation Society of America. While in Chariton he was an active member and past Post Commander of the America Legion.
He has lived in West Des Moines for the past 17 years and for the last 14 years has enjoyed being a winter Texan in Edinburg, Texas. He has many friends in Texas and at the West Des Moines Senior Citizens Center. He enjoyed gardening and working on his homes in Iowa and Texas.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jay Curt; his beloved wife, Zona L., whom he married on Feb. 15, 1941; two brothers, Marlin Foderberg of Rogers, Ark. and Gaylor Foderberg of Forsyth, Mo.; and a sister, Mildred Riddle of Dennison.
He is survived by a sister, LeEtta Bryner of Ames; two sons, Dennis L. Foderberg and his wife, Margaret Jo (formerly Van Zee of Chariton) of Shoreview, Minn.; Gregory K. Foderberg and his wife, Jenny, of Gladestone, Mo.; and one daughter, Kim LeAnn Binkly and her husband, Lem, of Bellview, Nebr. He is also survived by five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 17, at the Fielding Funeral Home, with Elder Joseph Smith officiating. Bearers were Doug Foderberg, Jeff Foderberg, John McDunn, Gary McDunn, John Vallinch and Don Mathena. Interment was in the Chariton Cemetery.
