J.H. Jewett, who arrived in San Francisco bay June 14, 1849, on the steamer Panama, passed away June 14, 1911, at his beautiful country home, “Oak Ridge,” near Kenwood, after a short illness at the advanced age of 87 years. The deceased was a native of Connecticut, where he was born May 5, 1824.
The first twenty-five years after arriving in California Mr. Jewett resided in San Francisco, and then went to Marysville, where he was engaged in the banking business and made his home for thirty-two years. Five years ago he came to Oak Ridge, where he has resided ever since.
Mr. Jewett suffered an injury to his right leg some time ago, and has been a partial cripple for some time past. For the past six weeks he was confined to his home and finally passed away from exhaustion and old age.
Mr. Jewett was a well known pioneer and served as president of the California Society of Pioneers. He was very successful in business and accumulated considerable wealth. He has no relatives in California.
