Charner was the son of John and Elizabeth Timms Humphries of Chester Co. S. C. Charner married Mary Darby on 29 Jan 1818 in South Carolina. Several years later they moved to Georgia to an area west of Atlanta that would become known as the "West End". Charner and Mary had the following children:

1. Nancy Harriet Humphries
2. Elizabeth Humphries Gilbert
3. Mary Humphries
4. Charner Humphries
5. George Humphries
6. Asa Humphries
7. John Humphries

In 1835 he acquired Land Lot 108 in the land lottery, and built a tavern there called White Hall Tavern, which eventually became a U. S. Post Office. Charner and Mary's bodies were originally buried on the White Hall property, but were eventually moved to Westview.
