John Dennis Engstrom, known to everybody as "Denny, Enk or Enky", 73, of 530 College St., Youngsville, Pa., died, Friday January 21, 2011 at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, surrounded by his family.
Denny was born August 28, 1937 in Warren, Pa., a son of the late Wendell and Alice (Briggs) Engstrom. While living in Youngsville all of his life with the exception of college, Denny graduated from Youngsville High School in 1955 and Upsala College in 1960 with an AB Degree in English and a Minor in Psychology and Economics. He worked a short time for Northern Area High School and then taught English, College Prep Speech, and Sports Literature at Eisenhower High School retiring in 1993 after 33 years of service. Denny spent 25 years coaching Track and Field with 20 of those at Eisenhower and 5 at Youngsville. Throughout those years he had 101 wins and 62 losses, took 44 athletes to State Track and coached over about 1500 kids. In addition to the coaching he also planned and directed the Warren County Track & Field meet, as well as 24 hour track team marathons to raise money for the sport. In the 1960's Denny created "The Cinderbelles", a group of young ladies taught to officiate the track meets because there were no girl's sports at that time. He was also was a Football coach for approximately 15 years.
Denny was a Water Safety Instructor and taught swimming lessons at the Brokenstraw Valley Swimming Pool as well as the Pool Director for many years. He was inducted to the Warren County Sports Hall of Fame and continued to be on the Board of Directors for the organization. He enjoyed moderating the High School Bowl academic competition for 14 seasons.
He participated in Warren Players Club and directed the Senior Class Play "45 Minutes from Broadway" at Youngsville High School. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, bowling, and golfing where he had the opportunity to attend practice rounds for the Masters. He was a founding member of the Youngsville Senior Golf League, and was also a member of the Youngsville American Legion Post 658.
He was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Penguins and enjoyed watching the games. He enjoyed going to the casinos and traveling, especially to the shore, the Caribbean Islands, fishing trips to Canada and spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his daughter Beth Engstrom, Pittsburgh, Pa.: a son Kyle (Bobbi) Engstrom, of Irvine, Pa.; grandson Owen Engstrom; two step-grandchildren Jamie and Joe Hannold, Irvine, Pa; sister in laws Nancy Nelson, Pittsfield, Pa. and Mary Moyle, Sugar Hills, Ga. Several cousins, nieces and nephew also survive.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife Melinda, who died November 18, 2009, a brother Charles Engstrom, and his father-in-law Albert Lyford.
