Betsy's childhood years were at first difficult, as her parents, already in their thirties, had moved from their home in New York to start life anew in Michigan, just four years before Betsy was born.

In time, however, the Davenports became one of the wealthiest families in the township, thanks to hard-working Nathaniel, Betsy's father. (See her parents' biographies for the initial hardships and ultimate success of Betsy's family.)

Betsy's siblings included Wallace (1835-1913), Hannah Jane (1836-?), Mary Caroline (1838-?), Emory Harrison (1841-1855), Nathaniel Jr. (1843-1863), Eunice Almeda (1847-1886) and Esther Loretta.
