Roosevelt Wilbur (R.W.) Campbell Sr., 76, died Friday at the Bulloch Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

The life-long resident of Bulloch County was the chairman of the deacon board at Little Bethel Baptist Church in Brooklet. He attended Johnson C. Smith University, graduated from Savannah State College and received his master's degree from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa. He taught at Statesboro High & Industrial School, Evans County Training School in Claxton, the Edward Johnson School in Brooklet, Julia P Bryant, Butler High School in Eatonton and Blakency Junior High School in Waynesboro where he retired after 36 years of service.

In 1991, after 18 years, he retired as educational supervisor of the school at the Coastal Correctional Institution in Savannah.

He was a life member of the N.E.A., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the World and the American Correction (Education) Association. He was honored as an I.D.E.A. fellow in 1967 and was among 100 educators who were given a free trip to a workshop in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was also president of the Department of Elementary School Principals from 1955 to 1961.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Geraldine Moody Campbell, Statesboro; two sons, R. Wilbur Campbell Jr., Atlanta and Ronald E. Campbell, Statesboro; three sisters, Mrs. Ida J. Lovett and Mrs. Evelyn Summers, both of Millen, and Mrs. Gladys Glover Davis, Newark, N.J.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Little Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Patrick Jones officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
