Richard V. (Rick) Sweet, age 60, of Duquesne, Mo., passed away at his home with his wife and daughter by his side at 11:40 a.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2011, after a courageous one-year battle with cancer.

Rick was born Dec. 16, 1950, in Springfield, Mo., and lived in the area his lifetime. An avid motorcyclist, he was a charter member of the Harley Owners' Group on both the Joplin and National level, rode in many MDA fundraising events including the 1st Ride For Life 25 years ago, volunteered at the Telethons and made many annual treks to Sturgis. He and his wife also worked together at Sturgis in their oil changing service there. In earlier years he was active in Duquesne government, serving as Duquesne's first mayor. He was active in the P.T.O. at Duquesne Elementary, where he was instrumental in starting the organization's annual Round-Up fundraiser. He had also served in the National Guard. For 12 years he worked at TAP JAC. In 1988, he joined his wife in operating Sweet Home Wallpapering where they worked together for 20 years. In 2008, he founded A Better Cut Tree Trimming Service. Rick was an awesome husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend. He was a member of Ignite Church.

He married the former Cinda K. Case on Aug. 18, 1983, at Miami, Okla. She survives.

Additional survivors include his daughter, Satina R. Sweet, of Duquesne; two grandsons and buddies, Hayden Kenneth and Nikolas Thyme Hewett; his parents, Dale and Jean Sweet, of Duquesne; four brothers, William D. Sweet and wife, Star, David M. Sweet and wife, Susan and special brother, Greg W. Sweet and wife, Gail. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Flora Case; loving sister-in-law, Linda Lamb and husband, Johnny; plus many nieces and nephews.

During his youth he attended MSSU along with his dear friends Dave and Martha Eden where he "majored in pitch and minored in pool". He also leaves behind his brother and sister of faith and love Scott and Nancy Hutson.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Cycle Connection Harley-Davidson. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until service time at Cycle Connection.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions would be appreciated toward grandsons education fund and toward Rick's Unfinished Dream fund, both in care of Parker Mortuary.
