William Nicholls, the son of James and Mary Nicholls, was born in Gwennap, Cornwall, England on February 28, 1844, and emigrated from England to the United States in 1867, settling in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio.

On July 3, 1873, James married Martha Clements, daughter of Joseph Clements and Jane Johnston, both born in Ireland but residents of Cleveland where their daughter Martha was born and raised.

William and Martha had six children:

1) Joseph C. Nicholls (1874-1965);
2) Edith Maud Nicholls (1875-1936);
3) Willie Nicholls (about 1878-?);
4) George Nicholls (1879-1881);
5) May L. Nicholls (1882-1905); and
6) George Andrews Nicholls (1887-?)

Martha (Clements) Nicholls died at the age of 36 in Cleveland on February 24, 1888.

On December 25, 1889 William Nicholls married Mary Lucretia Andrews, daughter of Amos H. Andrews and Jane Augusta Sutton of Indianfields Township, Tuscola County, Michigan. They were originally from Burton, Geauga County, Ohio.

William and Mary had two daughters:

1) Jane A. Nicholls (1892-?)
2) Grace Olive Nicholls (1896-1982)

William Nicholls died in Cleveland on April 20, 1904, and his wife Mary died in Bratenahl, Cuyahoga County, Ohio on October 25, 1921.

Obituary:

The death of William Nicholls, of Cleveland, Ohio, was announced by a telegram to relatives here on the 20th [of April, 1904], as he was the husband of Miss Mary L. Andrews, Sr., and the father of Mrs. A. H. Andrews, Jr. [sic].* The news of his death came as a great shock to the family as he had left his home and family in the best of spirits, and seemingly well, and was just about to commence his work as an employee of the Lake Shore Railroad Co., when he dropped dead. He was a machinist by trade and as his last work was to mend a broken car wheel, his fellow workmen in the shops sent a flower emblem of a broken wheel as a tribute to his memory. He leaves a wife and two children by his last marriage and four children by a former marriage, of which Mrs. Andrews is the oldest daughter. He was a kind and loving father and husband, and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. The funeral was held from his home and his remains were interred in the Woodland cemetery of that city. A. H. Andrews, wife and son, Amos, and wife, attended the funeral, returning home the first of the week.

*William Nicholls was not the father of Mrs. A.H. Andrews, Jr.; he was the father of Mrs. David H. Andrews, Jr.

(Tuscola County Advertiser, April 1904)

Note: William Nicholls' second wife, Mary L. Andrews, was a sister of David Andrews who married Edith Nicholls, daughter of William Nicholls and his first wife, Martha Clements. Thus, Mary, sister-in-law of Edith, also became her stepmother.
