She was born on October 24, 1901, in Athena, Oregon, to John T. and Alice Engelman King. She grew up and went to school in the Athena area along with her six brothers and an adopted cousin. Being the only daughter, she helped keep all the boys in line.
On November 2, 1919, she married Arthur M. Anderson in St. Anthony, Idaho. During their married lives, they lived in several western states, finally settling on the family homestead outside of Ashton, in Squirrel. There they raised their family, Arthur Leland "Andy" and A. Pernella "Penny," while farming. During the war years, Velma volunteered with the Red Cross and was in the Civil Air Patrol.
In the early 1960s, they retired from farming, and began spending winters in California. There they learned to play golf and enjoyed it so much that upon returning home in the spring, they began to build Aspen Acres Golf Club and RV Park, which just celebrated its 42nd anniversary.
Velma retired in the fall of 2002 when she and Penny moved to Fairwinds-Sandcreek in Idaho Falls.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers; husband, Art; an infant daughter; and son and daughter-in-law, Leland and Nancy Anderson.
Survivors include her daughter, Penny; grand-daughter, Nancy Pierce of Aspen Acres; great-granddaughter and great-great-granddaughter, Kathy Desiderio and Serena Rae Desiderio (4), of Gilbert, Ariz.; great-grandsons, Sean Cazier of Mesquite, Nev., and William Borger of the Boise area; and great-granddaughter and great-great-grandson, Erica Sue Frost and Clayton Heyman (11) of Blair, Nev.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at Buck-Miller-Hann Funeral Home, 825 E. 17th St. in Idaho Falls, with the Rev. Richard Laux officiating.
