Born July 4, 1918 in Brigham City, Utah to Roy Porter and Alta Jensina (Valentine) Barnard, Roy spent much of his youth in California and Utah.
Roy was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He graduated from Bear River High School and attended Utah State University before returning to California, where he made two important decisions. He began his 71 year marriage to Jean Mecham on August 11, 1939 and he chose a career in optometry, completing his pre-med requirements at Compton Junior College and then earning his medical degree from the Los Angeles School of Optometry in 1948.
Two years later, Roy and Jean returned to Brigham City, where he opened an optometrist's office on Main Street and practiced for over 45 years. His practice included patients from Northern Utah, Southern Idaho and Wyoming; he also established the optical and eye glasses program at Inter-mountain Indian School – many hundreds of students saw more clearly because of his services. When he and Jean built a house in Perry, Roy worked even harder – "but loved every minute of it' – while tending a multi-acre peach and cherry orchard and raising two award-winning Arabian stallions, Malastra', a grand champion parade stallion and Galup a grand champion show stallion.
Ever active in the community, Roy served as President of the Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club, and Box Elder Enterprises (a local investment group). For his many acts of service, he was chosen as Grand Marshall of both the Brigham City Peach Days and Perry City parades.
After retirement, Roy continued to share his optometry talents by gratuitously serving family and friends; he and Jean also enjoyed world travels and keeping up with the lives of their posterity. Roy's children Terry (Linda) Barnard and Nancy (Jon) Jepperson, seven grandchildren (and six spouses), and 15 great-grandchildren will always admire his hard work, loving personality, quirky humor, and amazing eyebrows.
He is survived by his wife, children grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and half-sister Donna Andrews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Dorothy Potter, half-sister Betty Douglas, half-brother Danny Kramer, grandson Joshua Jepperson, granddaughter-in-law Christy Barnard and great-grandson Grady Barnard.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. John and Michelle Markeson, Heidi, Brenda and Annette for their tender care.
