Daughter of John and Elizabeth (Jeans) Hunter.
At the age of about fourteen, she came with her parents in 1835 from North Carolina to settle at Lone Jack, MO. An old family story says that her mother arrived at her new home in a ‘grand buggy with matched white horses." Her parents had run a distillery back in North Carolina.
Her parents were supporters of education, as the next year they allowed a school to be built on their land:
"The two schools standing at that time were abandoned and a new one was built near the center of the district on the John Hunter farm." [Source: "Jackson County Pioneers," by Pearl Wilcox.]
