Kelly M. Engelstad, 64, of Union Lake, near Erskine, Minnesota, died unexpectedly of a cerebral aneurysm Saturday, December 13, 2008, at his family's winter home in Green Valley, Arizona.

Kelly was born in Crookston, Minnesota on August 18, 1944, and was the son of Eldon and Burnice (Berhow) Engelstad. He grew up on the family's farm northwest of Fertile, Minnesota, was baptized and confirmed at Varnes Lutheran Church, and graduated from Fertile High School in 1962. He entered the U.S. Army later that year on September 18th, and was stationed at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma until his honorable discharge on September 17, 1964. That fall he began working in the plant at the Dahlgren Company in Crookston. This was the start of what would turn out to be a forty-year long career, ending with his retirement from management of the Company in 2004. Kelly was united in marriage to Dianne Overgaard on July 29, 1966 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Crookston. They made their home on the farm near Fertile, moving to Crookston in 1970. A year later they were transferred to Fargo, North Dakota by Dahlgren's, returned to Crookston a year later. Kelly and Dianne raised two sons, Brian and Scott. For over thirty years the family had enjoyed summers spent at their cabin on Union Lake. In 1993 Kelly and Dianne moved from Crookston to their new home on the lake. For the past five years they had been spending winters in Green Valley.

Kelly was very active in the Crookston community and was a longtime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church where he had served on the board of deacons and as a catechist. He and Dianne were currently members of Concordia Lutheran Church in Fertile, and associate members of Desert Hills Lutheran Church in Green Valley. Kelly had served on the boards of the Bremer Bank in Crookston, ODC, RiverView Hospital, and the Varnes Memorial Cemetery. He was also a former member and president of the Crookston Chamber of Commerce. Outgoing by nature, he "never knew a stranger" and was always ready to share the latest joke. Kelly was devoted to his wife, Dianne, and the boys and their families. He loved spending time fishing and hunting with them and was extremely proud of their accomplishments. He was surrounded all his life by many good and true friends, and they were a special part of his life as well. He will be very sadly missed, and joyously remembered, by everyone who was a part of his life. May God bless Kelly's memory.

Loving family members include his wife of forty-two years, Dianne; his two sons and daughters-in-law, and three grandchildren-Scott and Tricia Engelstad, and their children, Sean and Lucy, of Wichita, KS; Brian and Jessica Engelstad and their daughter, Ryley, of Richfield, MN; his two brothers and sisters-in-law, Allan and Sharon Engelstad of Maple Lake, MN, near Mentor, and Mark and Lynda Engelstad of Grand Forks, ND; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Larry (Betty Ann) Overgaard of Fisher, MN, Earl (Faye) Overgaard and Marlys (Vern) Demarais, all of Crookston; his mother-in-law, Mildred Overgaard of Crookston; an uncle, Muret Berhow of Fertile, MN; three aunts, Deloris Doak of Fertile, Carna Russell of Olympia, WA, and Geneva Olson of Seattle, WA; and nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family.
