Denzell was the son of James Lowell & Cleo Delta "Ducky" (Walker) Mills. He was born in West Virginia and his family moved to New York when he was young.
Denzell and his cousin, Larry R. Hatcher both served in Vietnam. Larry later died from lung cancer caused by his exposure to Agent Orange while in Vietnam. There is a bridge in Flat Top, West Virginia on Rt. 19 that goes over the West Virginia Turnpike (south of Ghent exit), that is named DENZELL R. MILLS LARRY R. HATCHER MEMORIAL BRIDGE. This bridge is located at the foot of Egeria Rd. that goes to the homeplace of Denzell's and Larry's mothers. Larry is buried in the Agee Cemetery next to Denzell's mother, about 5 miles from the bridge.
Denzell had the following siblings:
1. James Lowell Mills, Jr.
2. Kyle Dean Mills
3. Charles E. Mills
4. Richard Keith Mills
5. David Byrl Mills
On Memorial Day, 2014, a ceremony was held at the Corwin Cemetery in memory or Denzell and another veteran. Denzell's brothers were presented with an honorary high school diploma for Denzell. Denzell had quit high school to join the Army during the Vietnam War.

Suggested edit: PFC Mills was killed in a firefight during Operation Kunia, in the Ho Bo Woods, Binh Duong Province. He was a member of Charlie Company, 14th Infantry Regiment (Golden Dragons), 25th (Tropic Lightning) Infantry Division. He had been In Country for only 32 days.
