He fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War, enlisting on 9 June 1863, and was a corporal in the Alabama Home Guard, specifically the Alabama Defenders of Lowndes County, which was disbanded on 9 March 1864. After that, he served in the CSA cavalry under Clanton's Brigade. He married Julia Ann Prather in Wilkes County GA on 17 December 1843. There were nine children born to this union: Harriet (born October 1844), Otis (born October 1845), Nancy (born 31 July 1847), Sara (born 25 August 1849), James (born 20 October 1851 - died 19 June 1923), Sidney (born 11 October 1853 - died 2 May 1928), Eliza (born 11 October 1857 - died 25 August 1884), Amanda (born 7 January 1861 - died 19 September 1910), and Willie Eugenia (born 17 November 1867 - died 23 September 1914). He died during a typhoid epidemic along with his daughter Eliza and her husband Thomas Mitchell.
