Like his father John P.H. he was a lawyer graduating from Syracuse University in 1879 with an AB degree and in 1892 with an AM. He was a Psi-Upsilon fraternity member, member of the University baseball team. He was admitted to the bar on 12/15/1881. Practicing in Poughkeepsie from 1881-90 & 1892-94, he traveled 1890-92. He probably worked for his father when he took a position with the New York Life Insurance Company as General Agent of Brooklyn, NY from 1894-1900. 1900-1904 he was General Manager of the Brooklyn Office of Equitable Life Assurance Society. From 1904 until his death he had his own independent agency. In 1896 he married Mai C. Lathrop who was born July 3, 1869 in Torrington, Connecticut.
They had one son John Lathrop born Nov. 16, 1898.
