Statesboro - Lowell M. "Cap" Mallard, 95, former Bulloch County sheriff, died Thursday at Bulloch County Hospital after a long illness. A Bulloch County native, he had lived in Statesboro most of his life and had served as Bulloch County sheriff from 1937 to 1945. He had been a state legislator immediately after World War II and was a former clerk for the City of Statesboro

Surviving are two sons, Ralph Mallard of Anderson, Ala., and Lawrence Mallard of Statesboro; two daughters, Mrs. Ruth M. Hamilton and Mrs. Penny Ann Stubbs, both of Statesboro; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Smith-Tillman Mortuary in Statesboro with burial in Eastside Cemetery.
