"DECK" AUD DIED FRIDAY AT HOME OF HIS DAUGHTER
Popular Resident of Herald had Spent His Entire Life in Vicinity of His Home.
More than a century ago pioneer settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee settled southern White County. Among them was a Baptist preacher, named
T.J. Aud, better known to old settlers as "Uncle Tommy" Aud. It is a grandson of this venerable preacher for whom we are here today to past our last sad tribute.
Jewel D Aud was born near the little village of Herald, Nov 27, 1864, near the close of the Civil War. He departed this life May 19, 1933, at the ripe age of 68 years, 5 months and 22 days. Mr Aud was known to his intimate friends as "Deck" and it was his destiny to grow to manhood, rear a large family and live and die within a few miles of his birthplace.
His only education was such as afforded by the rural schools of his day. After leaving school he chose the life work of his ancestors, a tiller of the soil, and he followed that avocation through life.
He was married to Clara Jacques Oct 31, 1888, and to this union were born eleven children, of whom one died in infancy. Another blessed their home for five years. Another son, Jack, grew to manhood, but lost his life in the flu epidemic that prevailed over the entire nation about the time of the closing of the World War.
Eight children still survive: Mrs Stella Browning, Norris City;
Mrs Effie Browning, New Haven; Mrs Ethel Racine, West Frankfort; Mrs Leathie Marlin, Gary, Ind.; Mrs Bessie McKinney, Carbondale, Mrs Lucile Brown, South Bend, Ind., and Julia and Lehman at home.
J D Aud's father's name was John S Aud, and his mother, Martha Aud. His father died nearly fifty years ago, and is mother at a later date. It is a remarkable fact this brother for whom we pay homage today, at the ripe age of nearly three score and ten, is the first one of his brothers and sisters that have crossed to the Great Beyond. There was probably not another family in White County so large, where the youngest child was more than a half century old, and the Death Angel had not crossed their portal.
Mr Aud's brothers are Francis R of Harrisburg, and Jake and Arnold of Herald. His sisters are Mrs Ed Chapman of Norris City, Mrs Ollie Murphy of Levy, Ark., and Mrs Lewis Newcomb of Herald.
He leaves besides brothers, sisters, children and a devoted wife, eight grandchildren, four step grandchildren, and one great grandchild, and legions of sympathetic friends who are glad to give the hand of sympathy to the bereaved family in this sad hour.
Mr Aud was not a member of any church, but he had faith. He had honor. He was kind-hearted, sympathetic and generous. He was of a cheerful disposition and hoped to get well within a few weeks of his last illness, but science has not yet found a rememdy for malignant cancer that caused him so much suffering, pain and death.
He departed this life at the home of his daughter, Mrs Stella Browning, of Norris City. He had only moved to near Norris City one year ago. All that medical science could do was done; all that living hands could do was done, but destiny called and he willingly answered the call.
His life work is over and if he had his life to live over again, he would live just as he has lived, because he has no grievous mistakes to amend. He lived honorably, and honorably he died. No man can do more........
........Funeral services were held at Union Ridge cemetery, Sunday, May 21, at eleven o'clock, conducted by Rev W J Leslie of Norris City, assisted by Rev E A Marlin of Herald, and Rev Gilbert Walden of McLeansboro.
The pall bearers were Everett Aud, Lowell Aud, Kenneth Aud, Emil Aud, Henry Aud and Noel Newcomb. Those in charge of the flowers were Rhoda Aud King, Mabel Aud Pankey, Vernell Browning, June Greer, Verbal Melton, Lena Medlin, Thelma Aud, Lucy Ray, Dora Millspaugh and Zola Millspaugh.
Mrs W E McKinney, Mr and Mrs Porter Castleman and Mrs Caldwell of Carbondale; Mrs Rhoda King and Mrs Mabel Pankey of Harrisburg were out of town people who attended the funeral.......
