James Gary Whiting was the fourth child and third son of Oscar Whiting and Mary Sullivan Whiting. As a young man he went by the nickname of "Maj."

He was educated in the Mapleton, Utah schools and Brigham Young University.

He filled a mission for the L.D.S. Church to South Africa and he encountered severe homesickness during that time.

He taught school for several years in Southern California.

He married Beryl Halse on June 1, 1956.

He died at home in Southern California.
