A man who started out in Ferris, Ellis County, 62 years ago with 50 cents and a horse and rose to vice-president of the Farmer's and Merchant's Bank there, A. E. Cox, 79, died Friday in a local hospital after a long illness.

At the time of his death, Mr. Cox in addition to his office in the bank was owner of a large lumberyard in Ferris which he had been operating for more than half a century. He was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the Ferris Masonic Lodge.

It was after he had finished his schooling at Ferris that Mr. Cox got his start in business with his horse and a 50-cent piece. Previously he had attended school at Mexia, where his family had moved from Goesbeck. He was born in Bayou Tunica, Louisiana, and brought to Texas when a child.

For a while during his early days Mr. Cox operated a lumberyard at Midlothian in Ellis County, and it was while there that he married the former Miss Johnnie Ann Babb of Ferris. Mrs. Cox died several years ago.

Surviving Mr. Cox are his two daughters, Mrs. Arthur E. Conner of Walton, New York, and Miss Ruby Cox of Ferris; a son, Logan B. Cox of Ferris; three brothers, W. T. Cox and Dr. J. W. Cox of Groesbeck, and Walter Cox of San Antonio; a sister, Mrs. J. R. Stroud of Groesbeck and two grandchildren
