Mr. Nelson was deputy of the fourth district, Junior Order of United American Mechanics. He had been in Henderson, NC working with the Junior Order. He also served as coroner.
He was first married to Mary "Mamie" Galloway and they had a son, Guy Vanburen. After her death he married Mary Jane "Janie" Harbison and they had one daughter, Anna Elizabeth.
The Nelsons lived on Collett Street in Morganton, in a house which was torn down to expand the Morganton News Herald building and parking lot.
John Lee was survived by his wife,Janie Harbison Nelson; son Guy Nelson; daughter Elizabeth; three brothers: Will, Walter, and George; four sisters: Nina Nelson Houk, Mary Gwyn, Lettie Nelson, and Lula Cox.
