He was a victim of the sinking of the RMS LEINSTER. The bodies of a number of those who drowned were carried by ocean currents for hundreds of miles and were washed up on the beaches of Wales,Isle of Man and Scotland.

The Royal Mail Ship "Leinster", owned by the City of Dublin Steam Packet Company, was torpedoed in the Irish Sea, 16 miles east of Dublin, shortly before 10am on the morning of 10th October 1918, on its outbound journey of 100km [68 miles] from Kingstown [now Dun Laoghaire], Dublin, to Holyhead, Anglesey, North Wales.

By the time of the 1911 census, Sydney was the youngest of their 5 surviving children.
In the 1901 and 1911 census returns the family were at Tipperstown/Stillorgan, Co. Dublin, but
later moved to Torquay Road, Foxrock, Co. Dublin. William Henry Crawford noted his occupation as a Gardener.
